Ike

Well, we have evacuated for our first hurricane. Ike is not supposed to hit the coast until sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning, but this is what Surfside already looks like. For those of you who don't live in LJ, this is the beach we go to that is about 15 minutes from our house. Do you recognize that sign, Nacho? If this is what it looks like half a day before the storm hits, we can't imagine what it will look like afterward. We drove up to Ft. Worth Wednesday so that we wouldn't get stuck in traffic. We packed our van with pictures, albums, and all the things you take with you when you aren't sure what you'll come back to. Of course, I keep thinking about things I didn't pack. I try to keep remembering that everything that is important to us is safe! Please pray that the damage is not too bad and that we will all be able to return home soon. In the meantime, we will enjoy unexpected time with the grandparents!

Good to know you guys made it outta there without the long traffic wait. And you're right. Everything there is replaceable and you are all safe! We'll still be praying for your community though.

It is a very emotional ordeal to evacuate not knowing what you will return to if you even can return. The bad thing for us is that, being old and all, most of our photos are printed and videos are on tape since digital didn't exist back in the day..... We left them. That was tough!

Mary Margaret called on Thursday night and I told her she should try not to collect much "stuff" because it sure was a struggle to go through 20 years of stuff and special treasures for five people. We all made some tough choices.

You're right, though, now that we're gone we just sit back and enjoy our unexpected time with friends and wait it out. The beautiful thing will be to see how community happens as people roll up their sleeves to do what it takes to get back to some sense of normal life. From the looks of your photos, and from seeing what we've seen in Galveston already, for some, normal may take a while.

First, you are right, everything you need is right there with you <3 safe and sound.
Second, we are praying that you guys can return home safely and to minimal damage. Maybe not so much quickly, though :)
And third, we are mentioned in the b-log! Yes.
